12th Sep 2018, 5:23 PMThis was almost late, due to some crap going on, and for the downtown-ey billboards on the last panel. Hopefully the parts where they speak Japanese to each other read like a foreign film—where you “hear” the strange words but can read what they’re saying at the bottom of the screen. (Maybe it makes you feel all smart when you read it, heh!) And hopefully I’ll get better at perspective...
12th Sep 2018, 10:49 PMI like it this way, with the translated text at the bottom but the actual text presented in the original language (at least translated into English letters, anyway, but that's splitting hair). It makes the language difference more clear than if you'd just put it in italics with a "translated from Japanese" caption at the bottom, like they did in old X-Men comics.
13th Sep 2018, 11:00 AMYeah, I used to do it like the old X-men comics (which I love btw), but eventually it started to feel less authentic to me. And if I did it in actual Japanese characters, you wouldn’t be able to “hear” it, so. I’m really glad you like it this way!
20th Oct 2020, 10:58 PMEvan grew up in Japan, so English is only his second language (or maybe his third or fourth—he knows a few languages)!
Kat learned Japanese as a hobby, and as a way to get in touch with her mixed heritage during those lonely years before Evan moved in. This was very handy because Evan was a wreck when he first came to live with them, and it was comforting for him to hear his native tongue.
