Author Notes

28th Nov 2020, 11:00 AM That’s not stalker-ish at all nope!

This scene is almost over, but since I don’t have anything else to say right now—how is everyone feeling about Xan?

I know some of you guys were saying that he didn’t seem like such a bad guy, but sometimes I actually think I might be making his motive(s) too obvious, but the fact that he’s a bad person was never supposed to be a big secret. I just wanna make sure nothing’s too “on the nose” you know? This is only my first story, so I’m sure there will be some mistakes (there already has been some), but with feedback and advice/criticism from my readers, (and maybe doing some more studying) I hope to continue to improve so that the episodes after the origin story will be even better!

28th Nov 2020, 11:08 AM I think asking for DNA samples is perfectly normal, but photos? Dat creepy
28th Nov 2020, 11:39 AM Yeah, Kairo’s probably having the same thought here.
28th Nov 2020, 11:19 AM "It's so I can clone them and then recognize who to eliminate. Duh."
28th Nov 2020, 11:43 AM Ooh dear, that’s a scary thought! :-O
28th Nov 2020, 11:25 AM Trust your gut Kairo! This guy is up to no good!
28th Nov 2020, 11:47 AM Good advice! If only Kairo listened to himself—payed attention to his own instincts and emotions more, but it seems he’s become so passive and pliable over the years. He may be little more than an obedient puppet at this point.
28th Nov 2020, 12:05 PM You definitely haven't made Xan's motives too obvious, because I'm still having a hard time pinpointing them.

I do get the sense of a ticking time bomb between Xan and Kairo, and something's gonna blow up eventually ;D
28th Nov 2020, 12:40 PM Aw that’s very encouraging, thank you! I love villains who constantly keep you guessing, so if Xan does that to the readers then I am thrilled!

You got a keen sense there! When one person dislikes the other so much, and the other just won’t communicate in a completely forthright way...something is definitely bound to blow up eventually.
28th Nov 2020, 1:21 PM Funny, I thought I was pretty clear about the bad taste Xan leaves in my mouth... Personally, I would rather go hungry than cooperate with him, but then again I've never made much of my life because of those kinds of choices, so there is that.

As to his motives, and especially for what he is asking for, I have an idea, but I think I'll keep it to myself.

ps... Hope you had a wonderful turkey day, I wasn't expecting another post til next weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised!

pps: Kairo, the correct response should have been "Eat dirt".
28th Nov 2020, 2:07 PM Oh don’t worry, you’ve definitely made it clear that you think Xan is bad news ;) a couple of others seemed a bit surprised that he wasn’t doing super “evil” things right off the bat after I announced that he was this episode’s villain, but that’s fair too. It’s quite interesting to hear different points of view when receiving feedback!

Haha I’m really curious about your idea...but best to keep potential spoilers to ourselves for now eh?

In Canada we celebrate thanksgiving in October, so thankfully we have one less event to plan for now! I hope Thanksgiving goes as well as it can for everyone else though, hopefully better than expected <3

That response would have been *chef’s kiss*
28th Nov 2020, 1:53 PM Nah I think you're doing great with Xan :). I came in with the knowledge that he was an eventual antagonist and still at the beginning of his introduction he didn't come across as immediately scheming or evil.

For most people I think a common sentiment is that villains that are complex or have believable motivations are always a good bet but I think almost any kind of villain can work, it's all about execution, kind of like how unique and organic the writing for them feels if that makes sense? So a mistake would be more in line with making them do something that contradicts the way you set up their psychology down the line. (Not to say characters can't change, but rather when they do something that wouldn't make sense given their current development and circumstances)

Something that breaks their character consistency, but that's my opinion and so far Xan is set up in a really intriguing way, not usual the antagonist is so close to home so to speak and I feel his sneaky ways can bring up interesting scenarios than if he was more overt with his motivations :D.
28th Nov 2020, 2:19 PM That’s a lot of good points, it gives me stuff to think about which is always awesome ;D

And thank you, I’m glad you’re liking him so far!

I wasn’t super-worried or anything, in some ways this comic really is an experiment for me, and you guys are the test subjects, mwhahahaa! X’D
In seriousness though, I’ve learned a lot from you guys and from other sources since I first started this, and I can see some places in the comic where I screwed up at first but then improved on later, so that’s why I wanna occasionally ask if there’s any obvious mistakes that I might be missing, that way it gets better overtime!

Thanks for the informative comment, I agree that character consistency is super important, and possibly underrated because I often find that inconsistent or lazy character writing is what drives me away from the superhero TV shows I’ve seen, it can be quite frustrating and takes you out of the story.
28th Nov 2020, 11:37 PM Np! :) Yeah I agree with character consistency in shows. even if the show's wacky and over the top, character consistency goes miles
29th Nov 2020, 12:35 AM Wacky over-the-top shows with good character writing are literally the best thing in existence ;3
16th Jan 2021, 4:22 PM Looking good and digging the new art style!
16th Jan 2021, 4:53 PM Thank you! Yeah the art style has evolved somewhat, and I definitely changed the way I draw Kairo’s hair again haha
