21st May 2022, 12:00 PMOkay Kairo, you’re actually not doing half-bad here!
I’ve realized I’m having some trouble drawing Kat on model lately, sometimes I draw her eyes too low on her face (like last page) or I’m just struggling to emote certain feelings with her new eye design I gave her recently. I guess it will take a little bit to get used to, however I like the way she turned out here d(^^)b
21st May 2022, 1:14 PMNext step: don't dismiss sincere gratitude with "whatever" XD
I haven't noticed any off-model-ness personally, but I understand the struggle. I always find it fascinating when character designs subtly change over the years. It often happens without the author/artist even noticing until they stop and look back :P
21st May 2022, 6:55 PMKairo cannot take a compliment. He doesn’t know how!
And thanks! yeah Kat is one of the harder ones to draw lately, but it varies I think. And I love to see how much character evolve too, sometimes it happens quicker than expected haha.
21st May 2022, 1:30 PMDaw That was pretty nice turn around when he gets around to explaining himself! Echoing that the model expressions haven't seemed different to me although i def relate, it's something I'm trying to get more consistent with lately too haha.
Kat's expression looks so relieved there great job :D
21st May 2022, 2:18 PMThis might sound harsh. When training first started, Kairo pushed very hard, because it's not enough to be committed to an idea, you also need to be committed to putting in the work for that idea.
Kate DID need to learn that, and at this point has. She is actually now at a point where she can understand what needs to be worked on, and actually have some input on how that's done.
on the other side of this though, Kairo is just now realizing that he should have figured that out a couple of weeks earlier.
21st May 2022, 6:59 PMThat’s fair. I think Kat did need sort of a loving kick-in-the-pants, but being more open to her as a person is something Kairo probably needed from the beginning, and is just now forcing himself to acknowledge. But better now than never for both of them!
22nd May 2022, 1:48 AMI'm sure this is nice and heartwarming to some, and it sounds like what my kickboxing teacher would advise, but I hope the organization didn't hire him to be an instructor or anything (I actually forgot his official job title). Speaking of him, I physically felt Kairo's awkwardness in that middle panel.
22nd May 2022, 8:57 AMKairo’s official job title (with the SP) would be “Field Agent” but now he’s been movies to this position of training the kids.
With Xan, Kairo is basically a Go-pher, or a transporter. Stealing stuff for him that’s really hard to acquire. (It could definitely use more thought, but for this story we don’t see a ton of Kairo’s jobs in detail).
22nd May 2022, 6:44 AMI'll echo what others have said about not noticing that Kat looks off-model lately, but I do think she looks really good in the one full face shot you drew of her here.
I remember when I was designing my own characters, I read something that said that if each character has distinctive features, then the readers are less likely to notice subtle inconsistencies, since they'll still be able to identify which character it is. Your characters all have distinct enough designs that we can instantly recognize who they are when we see them, so minor off-model features don't give them a sense of looking "wrong."
Of course, I know how it as an artist. You have a stronger sense of how you want it to look than the reader does, so when it doesn't turn out quite right, it bothers you.
